The PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK pays well. The real issue is not the reward rate. It’s figuring out if you actually got it on each transaction.
What It Currently Pays
One reward point is worth ₹1.
Under the current reward terms, the card earns:
- 10% on eligible PhonePe recharges, utilities, bills, insurance and travel
- 5% on eligible online purchases
- 1% on other eligible spending
Monthly caps: ₹1,500 for PhonePe (not insurance), ₹500 for insurance, ₹1,000 for online, ₹2,000 for everything else. These reset with the calendar month, not your billing cycle. Easy to miss.
Annual fee: ₹1,499 plus GST.Waived if you spend ₹3 lakh in a year. The joining perk is a ₹1,500 PhonePe voucher—not cash—and does not cover the GST.
What Changed
From July 2026, SBI cut the online reward cap from ₹2,000 to ₹1,000. UPI payments outside PhonePe now get nothing.
Jewellery, education, gifts, tolls and a bunch of other categories are out. Utilities and insurance only count if you pay through PhonePe.
The card is less flexible than it was at launch.
The Community Experience
Many users have successfully received 5% back on regular online purchases and 10% back on bills paid through PhonePe. The underlying reward program is real.
The big complaint: it’s opaque. You end up doing the math yourself, chasing down misclassified transactions, and guessing which purchase got which rate.
After July, UPI transactions outside PhonePe earn nothing. Even some PhonePe bill payments get inconsistent rewards. Not every complaint is a bug, but if you have to audit your card, that’s a problem.
PhonePe usually adds convenience fees to bill payments. That eats into your rewards.
Who This Card Is Actually For
This card is for people who already pay big utility bills, insurance, recharges or travel through PhonePe, and also shop online a lot.
It works if you:
- Use PhonePe as your main payments app
- Have up to ₹15,000 of eligible PhonePe bills and ₹5,000 of insurance payments in a month
- Spend up to ₹20,000 online
- Are willing to verify your reward points every month
Skip it if you want to use other UPI apps, expect automatic cashback, or don’t want to hunt for missing reward points. The ₹1,499 plus GST fee is pointless if you’re a light user.
The Verdict
Think about it.
Get it if you already use PhonePe for big bills and can max out the ₹1,000 monthly online reward. The returns beat the fee.
Skip it if you want automatic cashback, freedom to use any UPI app, or a reward statement that doesn’t need a spreadsheet.
Still a good card for a certain spending pattern. I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone anymore.
